What does John 6:20 mean?
When Jesus walked toward his disciples across the water in the darkness, their fear was completely understandable, yet Jesus' response was quietly powerful. His simple declaration, "It is I," anchors them to his identity in a moment when they felt untethered and vulnerable. The reassurance not to be afraid wasn't dismissing their fear, but inviting them to recognize that his presence changes everything about their situation. This same comfort reaches across centuries to us. When life feels uncertain or threatening, these words remind us that Jesus doesn't wait for us to get ourselves together before meeting us. He comes to us in the middle of our fear and says, "I am here." His presence itself becomes the reason fear doesn't have the final word.
