What does John 5:44 mean?
Jesus is pointing out a human trap that blocks genuine faith. When we're constantly seeking approval and affirmation from each other, we become trapped in a cycle where our sense of worth depends on what others think. That constant hunger for human recognition actually crowds out our ability to trust God and live by His values instead. The question isn't condemning you for ever caring what others think, but rather inviting you to notice when that becomes your primary motivation. When your deepest need is to be seen and validated by people around you, you'll naturally bend yourself to please them, which makes it hard to follow God even when it costs you something. Real belief in God requires letting His opinion of you become more foundational than everyone else's combined.
