John 5:43
“I have come in my Father’s name, and you don’t receive me. If another comes in his own name, you will receive him.”
What does John 5:43 mean?
Jesus is pointing out a painful contradiction in the hearts of the religious leaders he's speaking to. They claim to honor God and follow God's ways, yet they reject Jesus, who comes representing God's authority and mission. At the same time, they're quick to embrace false messiahs and leaders who come pursuing their own power and agenda rather than God's. It's a mirror held up to show how easily we can fool ourselves about what we actually value. We might say we want truth, goodness, or God's will, but our actions reveal we sometimes prefer comfortable lies or leaders who tell us what we want to hear. Jesus is gently asking his listeners (and us) to examine whether we're truly open to what God is actually offering, or whether we're really just looking for someone who will validate what we've already decided we want.
