John 4:35
“Don’t you say, ‘There are yet four months until the harvest?’ Behold, I tell you, lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, that they are white for harvest already.”
What does John 4:35 mean?
Jesus is speaking to his disciples in Samaria, and he's breaking through their limited way of seeing the world. When they're thinking about planting seasons and farming timelines, he's inviting them to open their eyes to something happening right now, in that very moment. The "fields white for harvest" aren't just about crops, but about the spiritual readiness of the people around them, particularly the Samaritans (who were considered outsiders by Jewish culture at the time). What makes this so striking is that Jesus is urging them not to postpone or delay. The harvest isn't some distant future event we should prepare for someday, but an urgent present reality requiring attention today. He's gently challenging the disciples to shift their perspective, to see the people in front of them as ready to receive God's message right now, not as a project for later. This speaks to many of us who find ourselves waiting for the "right time" to step into our calling or serve others. Jesus reminds us that readiness and opportunity are often already here, waiting for us to notice them and act.
