John 4:34
“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me, and to accomplish his work.”
What does John 4:34 mean?
Jesus is describing what truly sustains and fulfills him, and it's not physical nourishment. He's saying that doing God's will and completing God's work are what he lives for, the way food and water keep us alive. This comes right after Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman at a well, and his disciples are surprised to find him uninterested in eating, so wrapped up is he in the conversation and the work ahead. The image Jesus uses speaks to something deep: when you're aligned with your purpose, when you're doing what you're meant to do, it feeds your soul in a way nothing else can. For anyone listening then or now, it's an invitation to consider what would truly nourish us, beyond the obvious physical needs.
