John 4:22
“You worship that which you don’t know. We worship that which we know; for salvation is from the Jews.”
What does John 4:22 mean?
Jesus is speaking to a Samaritan woman about the difference between authentic and incomplete faith. The Samaritans had their own version of God's law and their own sacred mountain, but they'd rejected the fuller revelation God had given through the Jewish prophets and scriptures. Jesus isn't being boastful here, but honest: the Jewish people had received God's word and promises directly, including the coming of the Messiah himself. For us today, this speaks to something deeper than geography or ethnicity. Jesus is saying that real worship comes from actually knowing God, not just guessing at who he is or following what feels right. He's inviting this woman (and us) into genuine relationship with God based on truth, not on incomplete or distorted ideas. The good news is that this knowledge and salvation he's talking about isn't locked away from her or from any of us, no matter our background, just as she discovers in the rest of this conversation.
