John 4:23
“But the hour comes, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such to be his worshipers.”
What does John 4:23 mean?
Jesus is telling a Samaritan woman that God isn't looking for worship confined to specific places or rituals, but rather for genuine encounters with him from the heart. When he says "spirit and truth," he means authentic devotion rooted in who God actually is, not just going through the motions of religious tradition. This was radical in his context because both Jews and Samaritans believed God could only be properly worshiped in their respective temples, yet Jesus opens the door for anyone, anywhere, to meet God honestly and intimately. What might strike you most is the last part: God actively seeks out people like this. He's not distant or difficult to reach. He desires real relationship with you more than you desire it with him.
