What does John 3:9 mean?

Nicodemus was a respected teacher and a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish council, so his question carries real weight. Jesus had just told him that to see God's kingdom, a person must be "born again" or "born from above," and Nicodemus is genuinely puzzled. How can someone be born a second time? What makes this moment touching is that Nicodemus asks honestly rather than dismissively. He's wrestling with something that doesn't fit into his existing framework, and instead of pretending to understand, he admits his confusion. In many ways, his question invites Jesus to go deeper, and Jesus responds by explaining spiritual rebirth in terms Nicodemus might grasp. Sometimes the beginning of faith looks like this: not having all the answers, but being willing to ask the hard questions and stay open to what we don't yet understand.
