John 3:10
“Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things?”
What does John 3:10 mean?
Jesus is gently calling out Nicodemus, a respected Jewish leader who came asking serious questions about spiritual rebirth. The edge in this response comes from the fact that Nicodemus, as someone trained deeply in Scripture, should have recognized the concept Jesus was describing, yet he was struggling to grasp it. Jesus isn't being cruel here, but rather pointing out the gap between head knowledge and genuine understanding, between being an expert in religious texts and actually grasping their spiritual truth. It's a moment of compassionate challenge, inviting Nicodemus (and us) to move beyond surface-level knowledge into real transformation.
