John 3:8
“The wind blows where it wants to, and you hear its sound, but don’t know where it comes from and where it is going. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.””
What does John 3:8 mean?
Being born of the Spirit is a bit like the wind: you can see and feel its effects, but you can't fully control or predict it. Just as we hear the wind's sound and notice trees bending without understanding exactly where it originates or where it's headed, spiritual rebirth works in ways that go beyond our complete comprehension or management. Jesus is telling Nicodemus (who's struggling to understand how spiritual transformation even works) that the Holy Spirit moves with a freedom and mystery that we simply have to accept, not dissect. When you meet someone whose life has been genuinely changed by faith, you're witnessing the Spirit's work, even though the full story of how God changed that person's heart remains partly mysterious, known ultimately only to God.
