“Jesus answered him, “I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.”
What does John 18:20 mean?
Jesus is reminding his interrogator that there's nothing hidden about his ministry—everything he taught was done publicly, in the most visible places where people gathered. He's pointing out the absurdity of being arrested in secrecy if his teachings were a problem; if authorities disagreed with him, they could have confronted him openly at any time. There's a quiet dignity here: Jesus isn't ashamed of anything he's taught, and he won't pretend otherwise under pressure. For those of us wrestling with fear or shame about our faith, this reminds us that living honestly and openly (rather than hiding what we believe) actually has its own kind of strength.
