“Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said.””
What does John 18:21 mean?
Jesus is responding here to a high priest who's trying to trap him into saying something incriminating during his arrest and trial. Rather than defend himself through argument, Jesus points to the obvious reality: there are witnesses everywhere who heard his teaching directly. He's essentially saying, "My words aren't secret or hidden—ask anyone who was there." This reflects both Jesus' confidence in his message and a practical truth about accountability. His teaching happened in public, in front of crowds, with nothing to hide. If someone wanted to know what he actually taught, they didn't need to extract it from him under pressure; they could simply talk to the people who were there. It's a calm reminder that honesty and transparency need no elaborate defense.
