What does John 18:19 mean?

The high priest is trying to build a case against Jesus by getting him to incriminate himself or his followers. He wants Jesus to explain his teachings and name names, perhaps hoping for admissions that could be used as evidence in the trial ahead. It's a interrogation tactic, pure and simple. What's striking is what Jesus chooses to do next. Rather than defending himself or protecting his disciples by staying silent, he redirects the question entirely, pointing out that his teaching has been public all along. He's not hiding anything because he has nothing to hide. In a moment designed to trap him, Jesus simply refuses to play along with the game.
