John 16:6
“But because I have told you these things, sorrow has filled your heart.”
What does John 16:6 mean?
Jesus is naming something His disciples are already feeling—a deep sadness that's come from hearing hard truths about what's ahead. He's just told them He's going away, that the world will turn against them, and that painful separation is coming. Rather than pretending everything will be fine, He acknowledges their grief as real and valid. There's something tender in this moment. Jesus doesn't shame them for their sorrow or tell them to snap out of it. He simply sees them clearly and speaks to their actual experience. Sometimes the most loving thing someone can do is say, "Yes, I know this hurts," before moving forward into hope. That's what's happening here: He recognizes their hearts are heavy with what they've just learned.
