John 16:5
“But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’”
What does John 16:5 mean?
Jesus is pointing out something that strikes him as odd in that moment, even though his disciples have every reason to be confused and upset. He's preparing to leave them through his crucifixion and return to God the Father, yet no one is asking the obvious question: where are you going? It's a gentle observation about their emotional state, perhaps a mix of shock, fear, and grief that's left them speechless when they'd normally press him with questions. In the verses that follow, Jesus will explain that this departure, though it feels like abandonment, is actually necessary and good for them because it makes way for the Holy Spirit to come and live within them.
