John 16:4
“But I have told you these things, so that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you about them. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.”
What does John 16:4 mean?
Jesus is preparing his disciples for the difficult days ahead by reminding them of warnings he's already given. He's essentially saying, "When hard things happen, you'll remember I told you this was coming, and that memory will help anchor your faith." There's real tenderness in this: he waited to share these hard truths until they'd built a strong relationship with him, until they had enough time together to trust that his warnings came from love, not fear-mongering. He's not trying to catch them off guard or leave them blindsided. When confusion or suffering comes, they'll have the comfort of knowing Jesus saw it coming and prepared them anyway.
