John 16:7
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I don’t go away, the Counselor won’t come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”
What does John 16:7 mean?
Jesus is preparing his disciples for his departure, and he's saying something that probably felt counterintuitive to them: his leaving would actually be better for them. He's speaking about the Holy Spirit, whom he calls the Counselor or Helper, and promising that once he returns to heaven, God's Spirit will come to live in and among his followers in a new way. Rather than having Jesus physically present in one place, they'll have the constant, internal presence of the Holy Spirit guiding them from within. For anyone who feels abandoned or afraid of loss, this verse offers a deeper truth: sometimes what feels like absence is actually a transformation into something more intimate and accessible.
