What does John 16:12 mean?

Jesus is speaking to his disciples just before his arrest, and he's being honest about their spiritual readiness. They've been with him for years, but they still can't fully grasp everything he wants to teach them, partly because they're about to experience the trauma of his death. It's like telling someone the full story of a loss before they've even experienced it, when they won't have the emotional framework to understand. What's striking here is Jesus's gentleness. Rather than scold them for their limitations, he acknowledges them with compassion. He promises that there's more wisdom coming, especially through the Holy Spirit after his resurrection and ascension. For anyone feeling spiritually stuck or like they don't understand their faith as deeply as they'd like, this verse offers comfort: spiritual growth happens at the pace we can actually bear, and that's not a failure, it's how we're made.
