John 15:20
“Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his lord.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours.”
What does John 15:20 mean?
Jesus is reminding his followers that they shouldn't expect easier treatment than he received. Just as servants in that culture occupied a lower position than their masters, his disciples would naturally face similar opposition and rejection that he faced, since they're following in his footsteps. At the same time, he's offering encouragement: just as some people responded to his message with genuine faith, some will also respond faithfully to the disciples' witness. This verse doesn't promise comfort or popularity, but it does promise consistency—the same dynamic that played out in Jesus's ministry will continue in theirs, for better and for worse.
