What does John 15:13 mean?

Jesus is describing the ultimate expression of love: being willing to give up everything, even your life, for someone else's sake. This isn't about dramatic heroics, though it can include that. It's about a love so genuine and committed that it puts another person's wellbeing above your own survival. When you truly love someone this way, you're no longer living for yourself, but for them. What makes this statement profound is that Jesus spoke these words just before going to the cross, making them not just teaching but a promise of what he was about to do. He's inviting his followers into a relationship where they understand they're loved this deeply and are called to love others the same way. That kind of love transforms everything around it.
