What does John 14:3 mean?

Jesus is making a promise to His followers about what comes after this life. He's saying that He's going ahead to prepare a home for us in heaven, and He will personally return to bring us there so we can be with Him forever. It's the kind of commitment someone makes when they truly love and value another person, like a groom preparing a home for his bride before the wedding. In the midst of Jesus telling His disciples He's about to leave them through His death, this verse offers them (and us) profound comfort: separation is temporary, and reunion is certain.
