John 14:17
“the Spirit of truth, whom the world can’t receive; for it doesn’t see him, neither knows him. You know him, for he lives with you, and will be in you.”
What does John 14:17 mean?
Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit here, describing how the world operates differently from his followers. The "world" in John's language means people who are closed off from God's ways, and they can't perceive the Spirit because they're not looking for him or open to recognizing him. But Jesus promises his disciples something different: they already know the Spirit because he's actively present with them, and he will take up residence inside them after Jesus returns to heaven. There's real comfort in this for anyone who feels like their faith or spiritual awareness sets them apart from those around them. Jesus isn't saying you're better, but he is saying that sensing God's presence is a privilege given to those who've turned toward him, and that presence isn't temporary or distant. It's intimate and interior.
