John 13:36
“Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you can’t follow now, but you will follow afterwards.””
What does John 13:36 mean?
Peter is asking Jesus where he's heading, sensing that something significant is about to happen. Jesus's answer is tender but honest: he's going somewhere Peter cannot yet accompany him, though one day Peter will. The "afterwards" hints at Peter's own future suffering and death, when he would eventually follow Jesus into that same sacrificial path. In this moment, Peter doesn't fully grasp what Jesus means. He's confused and even a little defensive (as we see in the next verse when he insists he'd die for Jesus right then). But Jesus is gently preparing him for what's coming, both immediately and in the years ahead. There's comfort in knowing that Jesus isn't leaving Peter behind forever, and that our own difficult journeys often make sense only when we look back on them.
