What does John 13:37 mean?
Peter's question captures a very human impulse: he wants to follow Jesus immediately and completely, even to the point of dying for him. His bold declaration shows genuine love and devotion, but Jesus has just told him that he can't come where Jesus is going—at least not yet. Peter's confusion makes sense; he doesn't yet understand that Jesus is about to be arrested and crucified, or that Peter himself isn't ready for what's coming. This moment is tender and a little poignant: Peter means what he says about his willingness to die, but within hours he'll deny even knowing Jesus three times. It's a reminder that our strongest intentions can falter when we're tested, and that following Jesus is more complex than we can imagine in advance.
