What does John 13:35 mean?

Jesus is saying that the world will recognize his followers not by special knowledge, impressive words, or perfect behavior, but by how they treat each other. Love becomes the visible sign, the unmistakable mark that shows someone belongs to him. This is remarkable because it places the burden on something both simple and extraordinarily difficult: genuine care for one another. It means that our faith isn't just something private between us and God, but something that spills out into how we show up for the people around us, especially those in our own communities. When people see Christians actually listening to each other, supporting each other through pain, and choosing kindness even when it's costly, that's when they see Jesus most clearly.
