What does John 13:34 mean?
Jesus wasn't asking his followers to invent a new feeling, but to live by a radically different standard of love. He points to his own example: a love that serves without keeping score, that reaches across divides, that stays faithful even when it costs everything. This command came right after he washed his disciples' feet, an act of humble service that would have shocked them coming from their teacher. What makes this love "new" is that it's not based on whether someone deserves it or returns it. It's the kind of love Jesus showed them, and it becomes the identifying mark of his community.
