What does John 13:32 mean?
In this moment, Jesus has just sent Judas out into the night to betray him, setting the final events in motion. Jesus is speaking about what's about to happen, and his language reflects a kind of certainty and peace about his suffering and death. When Jesus says God will be glorified in him, he means that through his sacrifice, God's character and love will be revealed in the most powerful way possible. And when he says God will glorify him in return, he's not talking about earthly honor or comfort, but about vindication and restoration, the promise that his obedience will ultimately be honored. The word "immediately" doesn't mean right at that moment, but rather that it's already set in motion, as certain as if it were already done. There's something deeply comforting here for anyone walking through a hard or sacrificial season. Jesus is saying that faithfulness and surrender don't go unnoticed or unrewarded by God, even when the immediate circumstances look like loss. The glory comes, and it comes through the very thing that looks like defeat.
