“Jesus said to him, “Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.””
What does John 13:10 mean?
Jesus is using the everyday practice of foot-washing to teach something deeper about spiritual cleansing. In his culture, people would bathe at home before going out, so their bodies would be clean; only their feet would gather dust and dirt from walking. When he says Peter only needs his feet washed, he means that most of the disciples have already been transformed by following him, so they don't need complete spiritual renewal. But then he adds a somber note: "not all of you are clean." He's referring to Judas, who will betray him that very night. Even though Judas has walked with Jesus and heard his teaching, he hasn't genuinely received it into his heart. This reminds us that being physically near Jesus, or even in a faith community, isn't the same as actually opening ourselves to his healing and truth.
