What does John 13:9 mean?
Peter's response shows how eager he is to be close to Jesus, but he's also revealing something about human nature: we sometimes swing from one extreme to another. Just moments before, he'd refused to let Jesus wash his feet at all, thinking it was beneath the Lord to serve him that way. Now, realizing he'd misunderstood, he goes overboard in the opposite direction, wanting a complete washing. What Peter doesn't yet understand is that Jesus isn't offering a full bath or spiritual makeover. Jesus is performing a humble, intimate act of service to show his disciples what love and leadership actually look like. The foot-washing itself is what matters, the gesture of humility that Peter will soon understand more deeply. Peter's enthusiasm is touching, but Jesus gently corrects him, reminding him that what's already been given is enough.
