John 12:25
“He who loves his life will lose it. He who hates his life in this world will keep it to eternal life.”
What does John 12:25 mean?
Jesus is describing a deep paradox about how we find true life. When we cling tightly to protecting ourselves, pursuing comfort, and keeping our lives small and safe, we actually end up losing what makes life meaningful. But when we release that desperate grip, loosen our attachment to temporary security, and orient our lives around something bigger than ourselves, we discover we've actually gained something that lasts forever. The language sounds harsh, but "hates his life in this world" doesn't mean self-harm or despair. It means stepping back from the endless pursuit of our own ease and status, and instead investing in what endures: love, purpose, service, connection to God. In surrendering control, we find we're more alive than before.
