John 12:24
“Most certainly I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains by itself alone. But if it dies, it bears much fruit.”
What does John 12:24 mean?
Jesus is using the natural cycle of a seed to help us understand something about his own death and what transformation looks like. When a seed is planted, it has to break apart and lose its original form in the soil, but that "death" is actually what makes it possible for new life to grow. Without that letting go, it stays isolated and fruitless. He's speaking here about his coming crucifixion, but the principle extends to anyone following him. Sometimes the deepest growth in our lives comes not from holding tightly to what we have or protecting ourselves, but from releasing our grip, accepting loss, and trusting that something more meaningful can come from it. It's a comforting image for anyone who's facing a hard season or wrestling with what it means to truly change.
