What does John 11:5 mean?

This simple statement comes just before one of Jesus's most dramatic miracles, and it matters more than it might first appear. Jesus loved these three siblings deeply, yet he deliberately waited two days after hearing that Lazarus was dying before heading to their town. It's easy to wonder why he would delay if he truly cared about them. The verse is there to anchor us: Jesus's love is real and constant, even when his actions confuse us or seem to contradict what we'd expect. Sometimes the people closest to us suffer, and we don't understand God's timing. This verse reminds us that love and mystery can exist together, and that God's care for us isn't measured by how quickly he fixes our pain.
