What does John 11:14 mean?

Jesus is being direct with his disciples because they haven't grasped what he's been trying to tell them. He's been speaking in spiritual language about Lazarus "sleeping," but they've misunderstood, thinking the man just needs rest to recover. Now Jesus cuts through the confusion and states the hard truth plainly: Lazarus has died. There's something tender in this moment, even in the stark announcement. Jesus isn't angry at their confusion, just clear about what needs to happen next. He's about to do something extraordinary, but first his friends need to understand the actual situation they're facing. Sometimes love means saying the difficult thing directly so people can meet reality and move forward together.
