John 11:13
βNow Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.β
What does John 11:13 mean?
Jesus's followers didn't yet understand what he was telling them. When he spoke mysteriously about his death, they assumed he simply meant that he was going to take a nap, so they tried to reassure him that sleep would help him feel better. It's a very human moment: the disciples filtered Jesus's words through what made sense to them, missing the harder truth he was trying to prepare them for. This happens to all of us sometimes, when we hear what we expect to hear rather than what's actually being said, especially when the truth is painful or difficult to accept.
