What does John 10:6 mean?

The disciples and religious leaders couldn't grasp what Jesus meant when he described himself as the shepherd and his followers as sheep who know his voice. Jesus was using an everyday image from their culture, since shepherding was familiar work in first-century Palestine, yet the spiritual truth underneath—about intimate relationship with God and protection through trust—went right past them. Sometimes the most important things are hidden in the simplest stories, and we miss them because we're listening with our minds already made up or too distracted to sit with what's being said. If you've ever felt confused by something spiritual or struggled to understand God's ways, you're in good company with the very people who walked alongside Jesus.
