What does John 10:4 mean?
A shepherd who knows his sheep and is known by them moves freely among his flock, and they instinctively follow because they recognize something true in his presence. Jesus is describing himself this way, suggesting that those who belong to him have developed a kind of inner familiarity with him—they've come to recognize his character, his way of loving, his truth.
