even as the Father knows me, and I know the Father. I lay down my life for the sheep.

What does John 10:15 mean?

Jesus is describing the depth of his relationship with God—a perfect, mutual knowing—and then connecting it directly to his sacrificial love. When he says he lays down his life for the sheep, he's speaking about his death on the cross, which he's choosing willingly for our sake. The sheep here represents all of us, his followers, and this verse shows that his ultimate act of love flows out of his intimate connection with God the Father. It's meant to comfort us: we're cared for by someone who knows us completely and loves us enough to give everything.
