“On the next day, he was determined to go out into Galilee, and he found Philip. Jesus said to him, “Follow me.””
What does John 1:43 mean?
After his calling of the first disciples, Jesus moves north toward Galilee and encounters Philip directly. The phrase "Follow me" carries weight here, not as a casual invitation but as Jesus extending himself personally to someone he had apparently selected. Philip doesn't appear to have been seeking Jesus out, yet Jesus finds him and calls him anyway, which speaks to how these early relationships often began through Jesus's initiative rather than the disciples' search. What makes this simple moment meaningful is what comes next in the story. Philip immediately goes and finds Nathanael, saying, "We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, wrote." Philip becomes a bridge between his own calling and someone else's encounter with Jesus. Sometimes our own yes to following Jesus becomes the doorway through which others meet him too.
