What does John 1:42 mean?
When Simon meets Jesus for the first time, something remarkable happens in just a glance. Jesus looks at him and immediately knows his name, his father's name, and sees something in him that demands a new identity. The name change from Simon to Cephas (Peter) means "rock" or "stone," which seems almost funny given what we know about Peter later, with all his doubts and stumbles. Yet Jesus sees past the wavering fisherman to the solid foundation he will become in building the church. This moment captures something beautiful about how Jesus meets us: he knows us completely, he calls us by name, and he sees our potential even before we see it ourselves. The fact that Jesus renames Simon shows that following Jesus isn't just about belief, it's about transformation. We're not staying the same, rocky and unstable as we might be.
