“Jesus turned, and saw them following, and said to them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which is to say, being interpreted, Teacher), “where are you staying?””
What does John 1:38 mean?
Jesus notices the two disciples trailing behind him and asks them a direct question: "What are you looking for?" It's the kind of question that cuts through surface politeness to the real longing underneath. The disciples respond by calling him "Rabbi" and asking where he's staying, which is really their way of saying they want to spend time with him, to know him better. There's something tender in this moment. Instead of turning them away or launching into a lecture, Jesus invites them to come and see where he lives. He meets their genuine seeking with openness.
