“No one has seen God at any time. The one and only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has declared him.”
What does John 1:18 mean?
When John wrote this, he was addressing a deep human longing: what is God really like? His answer cuts straight to the heart of Christian faith. Because no one can fully perceive God's infinite nature directly, God sent his Son into the world as the ultimate revelation, the one who knows God intimately and makes him known to us. The phrase "in the bosom of the Father" speaks of being held close, of complete trust and union. Jesus didn't just report facts about God from a distance, but revealed God's character through his own life, teachings, death, and resurrection. When we encounter Jesus in the gospels, we're encountering God's own self-disclosure, God becoming knowable to us in human form. This is especially comforting when we're confused about who God is or what he's like. We don't have to wonder in darkness; we can look to Jesus and see love, mercy, justice, and grace in action.
