What does John 1:19 mean?
The religious leaders in Jerusalem were curious and confused about John the Baptist. Word had spread that someone was baptizing people and drawing crowds, so they sent official representatives to figure out who he was and what authority he claimed. This moment marks the beginning of John's public explanation of his identity and his role as a forerunner to Jesus. Rather than claiming greatness for himself, John used their question as an opportunity to point people toward someone greater than himself.
