John 1:17
βFor the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.β
What does John 1:17 mean?
This verse contrasts two ways God has worked in human history. The law, given through Moses at Mount Sinai, set clear standards for behavior and showed people what sin looks like. But Jesus brought something the law alone couldn't provide: grace (unmerited kindness and forgiveness) and truth (the full revelation of who God really is and how deeply he loves us). The point isn't that the law was bad or that Moses failed. Rather, the law revealed our need, while Jesus offered the remedy. When you're struggling under guilt or feeling like you can never measure up, this verse reminds you that God's primary word to you isn't "do better," but "I love you anyway, and I've made a way."
