What does Job 38:22 mean?

God is speaking to Job after chapters of Job's anguished questions about his suffering, and these words are part of God's sweeping response that essentially says, "Do you understand how the world even works?" The image of snow and hail as treasuries or treasures is poetic—God is pointing out that these natural phenomena, which seem ordinary to us, are actually intricate systems full of complexity and beauty that Job (and we) don't fully comprehend. It's a gentle but firm reminder that there is so much happening in creation that operates perfectly without our understanding or control, suggesting that God's wisdom extends far beyond what causes Job's pain. The question invites us to stand in awe of what we don't know rather than demand answers about what we can't see.
