Job 38:21
“Surely you know, for you were born then, and the number of your days is great!”
What does Job 38:21 mean?
God is speaking to Job here after Job has questioned why he suffers, and His tone carries a sharp edge of irony. Job claims to understand how the world works, so God asks: if you were there when creation happened, if you've lived since the beginning of time, then surely you already know the answer to your complaint. Of course Job wasn't there, and his life, though long, is just a moment compared to God's eternal perspective. This is God's way of gently (if bluntly) reminding Job that his suffering, while real and painful, comes from a vantage point too limited to see the full picture. Sometimes our hardest seasons make more sense when we step back and acknowledge that we're looking at life from one small corner of a much larger story.
