Job 28:7
“That path no bird of prey knows, neither has the falcon’s eye seen it.”
What does Job 28:7 mean?
Job is describing wisdom as something so hidden and precious that even the sharpest-eyed creatures in creation cannot find it by their natural abilities. A bird of prey has eyesight legendary in the ancient world, yet even a falcon cannot spot the path to true wisdom. The point isn't really about birds, it's about the limits of human perception and effort: no amount of searching the world, no matter how keen our vision or relentless our seeking, will reveal wisdom to us on our own. This humbling image sets up Job's later conclusion that wisdom comes from God, not from human achievement or intelligence.
