What does Jeremiah 7:11 mean?
God is expressing deep disappointment with how the temple in Jerusalem had become a place of corruption and exploitation rather than genuine worship. Religious leaders and merchants were using the sacred space to cheat people and line their own pockets, while many came to the temple thinking that just showing up would protect them from God's judgment, regardless of how they actually lived. The image of a "den of robbers" is striking because it flips what the temple should be: instead of a place of refuge and holiness, it had become a hideout for those doing wrong. God's point is that he sees what's happening, and he won't pretend that religious activity means anything when it's wrapped around injustice and greed. This remains a sobering reminder that going through the motions spiritually while harming others doesn't fool God, and it ultimately hollows out our faith.
