What does Jeremiah 6:17 mean?

God appointed prophets and leaders, called "watchmen," to warn his people of danger ahead, just as a watchman on a city wall would sound a trumpet to alert everyone to threats. The watchmen's message was clear: pay attention, turn around, change course. But the people refused to hear it, stubbornly ignoring the warnings meant to protect them from harm. This captures something painfully human. We often know what we should do—we hear the warning, see the signs, sense the danger—yet we choose not to listen. We want to keep going the way we're going. Jeremiah uses this image to show how Israel resisted God's repeated attempts to call them back toward faithfulness, with tragic consequences. If that pattern feels familiar in your own life, there's still time to listen.
