Jeremiah 51:17

What does Jeremiah 51:17 mean?
Jeremiah spoke these words during Babylon's height, when the empire seemed unshakeable and people trusted in their idols. He's saying that when we turn away from knowing God, we lose our wisdom and become like animals, driven only by instinct and appetite. The specific image of disappointed goldsmiths points to how people pour their hopes and resources into things that can never truly satisfy, like statues that look impressive but are hollow and lifeless inside. This cuts to something many of us recognize in our own lives: there's a difference between what looks good on the surface and what actually has substance. When we build our lives on things without real depth, spiritual or otherwise, we end up let down.
