What does Jeremiah 5:30 mean?

The prophet Jeremiah is describing the spiritual and moral corruption that has spread through Judah. His listeners have abandoned God's ways so thoroughly that what should shock them no longer does, and what should grieve them has become normalized. He's essentially saying: "Wake up. Look at what's happened to us. This should horrify you." This captures something true about how we drift morally or spiritually, whether as individuals or communities. We often don't notice the slow erosion of our values until someone names it plainly and calls us back to see clearly. Jeremiah's startled tone invites us to ask honest questions about what we've gotten used to accepting or ignoring in our own lives.
